You Have to Stop the Pain

Fibromyalgia is an elusive and sometimes debilitating condition.  Fibromyalgia Syndrome, more commonly called FMS, is a disease which is very hard to diagnose.  Since there is no single test and no key identifiers like with cancer or other life altering diseases.  FMS also exhibits no pathological changes in the tissue it affects. Doctors often have to add up all of the complaints a patient might have then look for less obvious symptoms to even consider Fibromyalgia Syndrome as a possibility.  With this much difficulty even recognizing Fibromyalgia, it is no wonder why so many people have a very difficult time coping with the pain it brings.

While women between the age of 20 and 50 are most often effected, FMS is now changing the lives of an estimated 12 million patients and their families.  Some of those people might only experience a minor discomfort that comes and goes, while others might be completely disabled by it for a period of time.  Some patients may even have a daily change in the symptoms they have from FMS.  It is difficult to estimate the number of sufferers accurately, due to the fact that it is so difficult to diagnose.

Pain from Fibromyalgia can be triggered by one or more conditions including stress, anxiety, changes in the weather, coldness, dampness, drafts, or even changes in mood or hormonal changes.  Some FMS sufferers also have carpal tunnel syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, TMJ/TMD or several other conditions.  There is no one test for this disease, so many different conditions might be present, and might hide the appearance of Fibromyalgia.

While pain can be a great warning sign that our bodies use as a defense mechanism, there are very good reasons to eliminate the pain once a cause is discovered. One very important reason to eliminate pain would be to get better sleep. We know that pain can interrupt the normal sleep cycle either by keeping you up through tossing and turning, or just preventing you from reaching that important last restful Delta phase of sleep. This interruption of sleep has been linked to chronic muscle conditions such as Fibromyalgia and has been demonstrated to reduce healing of the body for all types of conditions. Research has shown that sleep interruption, especially working the "graveyard" shift, can increase the risk of developing cancer by up to 60%.  You can also factor in the stress that your body goes through when it is subjected to continual amounts of pain. When pain has become so intense that it does cause stress to your body, this can not only deter proper healing of an area, but has been linked to a variety of conditions and diseases. However, with the toxicity of oral medications, it may be more dangerous to use them to eliminate your pain. In 1998 it was reported that there was over one hundred thousand prescription drug related deaths and about two million severe drug-interaction related injuries. Quite a number of these deaths were from oral medications used to treat painful conditions.
